BUY A DREMEL! Did you hear what I say? Oh! This is one of the most impressive tools there are. Actually I should have said ROTARY TOOL as Dremel is a brand. My rotary tool is a Craftman, 5 speed tool. I did sanding, carving, pulishing, routing, cuting... My friends I did it all! And there are accesories to transform the dremel in a table router, bench drill and pencil rotary tool. If you are about to build an R2D2, you will need a rotary tool. I believe Dremel to be the heading brand on this market but I do not trust it. Neither do I trust Ryobi. But then again that's me. I bought my Craftman Rotary Tool at the beginning of the R2D2 project and still works perfectly. I have used it with fiberglass, metals, woods. You name it! It is a wonder tool!
Other tools which I have are the Craftman Industrial Hand Drill. I had a Black and Decker drill but the spirit scaped to infinity as a cloud of smoke! Then I bought the Craftman drill and have used it to sand and drill with no remorse. It is an immortal unit also bought at the beginning stages of my project.
The manual grinder shown with the drill is a Craftman Grinder. I bought this unit to take away excess fiberglass from the R2D2 body. I have not used it enough to say it is an immortal tool but do not doubt it is. It is supposed to be used to grind metals after soldering procedures. At the time I do not solder, but am thinking to buy an electrical soldering set. So it will be handy. Tools are always useful if you have them!
Other tools that you should have are screw drivers, wrench sets, adjustable wrenches, hammers, any size of clamps (lots of them!) and any blade that is used with your power tools.
Tools are meant to be used. If you don't have it you will have to buy it. If you already have it, you can begin working right away! That is why I bought tools even when I don't need them. I try to catch all Craftman Club specials. Eventually I end using the tool I bought. Warranty can be an issue not to buy the tool just for pleasure. After al,l if it is damaged a year after paid it won't matter if you just began using it yesterday. Good brand tools do not damage that easy. So if it is Craftman I buy it with no fear.
I hope my tool section has helped you to understand how to build some parts. It is very hard to explain every detail of part manufacturing but if your mind is now getting filled with ideas, you are on your way to developing your own techniques in how to use the wonderfull and available tools! Enjoy!
